CJI Highlights Technological Drawbacks, Citing Microsoft Outage's Global Impact on Judiciary

Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud, who has introduced significant technological advancements in the Indian judiciary, stated on Saturday that relying on technology also comes with certain drawbacks.

In this context, he pointed to the Microsoft outage on July 19, which disrupted numerous computers and servers globally, crippling services and telecommunications. He mentioned that his flight from Delhi to Madurai was almost cancelled due to the outage.

"I am an ardent believer of the benefits of technology and just yesterday we saw the adverse effects of technological dependance. After the Microsoft outage flights all across the country were cancelled. Numerous flights from Delhi were cancelled but I think it is the love of the people of Madurai which was showered upon me that has ensured my presence amongst all of you today," said the CJI.

The CJI was speaking at the Vigentennial Celebrations at the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court, marking its 20th anniversary.

On Friday, numerous Windows users experienced a sudden Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), resulting in significant global disruptions. However, reports indicate that contrary to initial assumptions, the issue was not caused by Microsoft but by a recent update from CrowdStrike, a US-based cybersecurity company.

The BSOD is a critical error screen that forces the system to freeze, rendering it temporarily unusable.

The live-streaming of several courtrooms in the Supreme Court was also adversely affected due to the Microsoft outage. As a result, lawyers were compelled to travel physically to the top court to argue their cases, and many had to seek adjournments.

CJI Chandrachud completed his board of cases by 12 PM yesterday to facilitate his travel to Madurai
