CJI DY Chandrachud Rebukes Lawyer for Questioning Court Master on Order Details

In a striking exchange in the Supreme Court today, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud reprimanded a lawyer who had checked with the court master regarding the details of an order he had dictated. "How dare you ask the court master what I dictated in court? Tomorrow, you will come to my house and ask my personal secretary what I am doing. Lawyers have lost all sense of decorum," he asserted.

Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized his authority, stating, "I am still in charge, though for a short time."

He warned against similar "funny tricks" in the future, highlighting the gravity of courtroom conduct as his tenure approaches its conclusion on November 10, when Justice Sanjiv Khanna will succeed him.

Throughout his two-year term, CJI Chandrachud has prioritized maintaining decorum in the courtroom, often admonishing lawyers for neglecting proper procedures and exhibiting disrespectful behavior. Recently, he chastised a lawyer for using the informal term "yeah" in court, declaring,

"This is not a coffee shop! What is this 'yeah yeah'? I am very allergic to this! This cannot be allowed." Earlier this year, during the electoral bonds case, he also reprimanded a lawyer for raising his voice, stating,

"Don’t shout at me. This is not a Hyde Park corner meeting; you are in court. If you want to file an application, move it via email. That’s the rule in this court.
