CJI DY Chandrachud appoints review commission for NLSIU Bangalore

Yesterday, the Chief Jusice of India DY Chandrachud appoints School Review Commission 2023-24, comprising Prof Timothy Endicott as chair and Prof Catherine O’Regan and Prof David B Wilkins as members.

The aim of the committee is to undertake a comprehensive review of all aspects of the university and submit its recommendations to the chancellor in mid-2024. The report will also be made public for the first time. The last SRC report was out in 2008 and the first in 1996.

Prof Endicott is the Vinerian Professor of English Law and a former dean of the law faculty at the University of Oxford and Prof Wilkins is the Lester Kissel Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. Inaugural director of the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights, Prof O’Regan has been a professor of human rights law at the University of Oxford since 2016.

Justice Chandrachud also suggested that the SRC’s review would provide the university with an opportunity to reflect and grow, particularly to not just train students, but also to help academics develop their highest potential.

“For the first time in the history of the university, the report of the SRC will be released publicly in accordance with the commitment of the chancellor and the members to ensure the highest standards of transparency and to enhance the utility of the review,” a statement from NLSIU said.

Vice-Chancellor Prof (Dr) Sudhir Krishnaswamy said, “The commission brings together pre-eminent global academics who have designed and shaped legal education across three continents. Their experience and wisdom will help NLS reflect on our role and contribution to consolidating the rule of law and constitutional democracy in India. As India grows in global stature, the SRC will help NLS reposition itself in the global conversation regarding the future.”
