CJI D.Y. Chandrachud Rejects Multiple Urgent Hearings by Different Lawyers, Citing Personal Credibility at Stake

On Tuesday, CJI D.Y. Chandrachud criticized the practice of multiple lawyers seeking urgent hearings for the same case, stating that he would not permit this as it jeopardizes his "personal credibility."

He noted that some lawyers attempt to expedite their cases by repeatedly bringing them up on different dates under various advocates.

"Stop this practice of repeated mentioning by different counsels. All of you are just trying to take a chance. Whatever little discretion I have as the Chief Justice will never be exercised in your favour, because there is an attempt to take this court for a ride.

"Get three different counsels and see... the judge blinks and you get an order. This is what is happening in this court. I will not do it. Because my personal credibility is at stake...," the CJI said.

These remarks were made at the beginning of the day's proceedings when a lawyer sought urgent listing for a case concerning the lapse of a mining lease.
