CJI Chandrachud recuses from contempt plea against Kunal Kamra, stand up comedian

Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud recused himself from hearing a batch of contempt petitions seeking contempt of court against the stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra for his tweets against the judiciary and judicial orders. Chief Justice of India Dr. DY Chandrachud recused himself after making remarks that the tweets have been made and contempt petitions have been filed against the order passed by the bench of which he was a member.

The order was passed that "We will place this matter before a bench to which I (CJI) am not a part of because the comments were made on the order which I have passed."

He further ordered that the matter would be listed before another bench after two weeks once the Chief Justice of India in his administrative capacity assigns a bench.

This is noteworthy that it came even after the parties appearing in the matter submitted they had no objections if the CJI continues hearing the matter.

In Nov 2020 Kamra refused to apologize to the show cause notice of contempt.

Kunal Kamra tweeted "the Supreme Court was the 'most supreme joke' in the country, and also posted a photoshopped photo of the Supreme Court bathed in saffron colors with a flag of the BJP hoisted on it. After a few days, he again posted a tweet showing his middle finger to the then CJI S.A. Bobde. He had also criticized the judgment of the then Justice and CJI Dr. Chandrachud granting bail to the then Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV and news anchor Arnab Goswami.
