At the 37th convocation of the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chief Justice of India, D.Y. Chandrachud, highlighted ongoing efforts to reduce the burden of court cases through various initiatives, including the use of Lok Adalats and modern technology.
He mentioned that Artificial Intelligence is being leveraged to translate court verdicts into regional languages, making them more accessible to the public.
Addressing concerns about the rising pendency of cases, CJI Chandrachud drew a parallel between hospitals and courts, noting that the increase in cases is a reflection of the public's trust in the judiciary, similar to how the growing number of patients signifies faith in hospitals. He stressed the need to expand court infrastructure, much like healthcare facilities, to accommodate this rising demand.
“From 1950 till 2024, there are around 37,000 SC verdicts and out of which, 22,000 judgements have been translated into Punjabi. More than 36,000 verdicts have been translated into Hindi. We are translating verdicts in all languages,” he said.
CJI Chandrachud also pointed out that a special Lok Adalat held last week resolved around 1,000 cases in just five days. Furthermore, during the summer vacation, 21 benches of the Supreme Court managed to hear around 4,000 cases, disposing of 1,170 of them.
He reiterated that by adopting new methods, the number of pending cases could be significantly reduced. Additionally, he noted that live streaming of Supreme Court hearings is being conducted to enhance transparency.
