CJI Chandrachud backs remote work for 'women law clerks' during menstrual health issues

During the 31st annual convocation of the National Law School of India University in Bengaluru, Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud discussed his approach to supporting women law clerks facing health issues tied to menstruation.

He mentioned that he allows these clerks to work remotely when they experience menstrual cramps. Last year, out of five law clerks, four were women. The CJI emphasized the importance of taking care of one's health and mentioned the provision of sanitary napkin dispensers in the female restrooms of the Supreme Court of India.

Addressing the graduates' career choices, the CJI encouraged them not to hastily commit to a single legal avenue. He advised exploration of various possibilities within the legal field, highlighting that skills acquired in one job can often be transferred to another.

He urged graduates to leave a positive mark on the world through their endeavors and emphasized living in the present moment.

As his speech concluded, the CJI used contemporary phrases to convey optimism. He wished the graduates many "first times" (FTs) as they embark on their journeys, paralleling these to the memorable "one last times" (OLTs) that mark endings.

Additionally, he cautioned against disregarding one's origins as they climb the ladder of success, encouraging them to remain grounded and appreciative of their journey.
