Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud continues to make headlines not only for his judicious rulings but also for his strict adherence to courtroom decorum. Known for his no-nonsense approach during hearings, CJI Chandrachud recently displayed his intolerance towards disruptions in the courtroom, sending a clear message that professionalism and order must prevail.
In a recent incident during a Supreme Court hearing on Monday, CJI Chandrachud expressed his displeasure when a lawyer spoke out of turn while the bench was delivering a judgment. "Have you done this in the High Court as well? This is very disgraceful behavior and lack of decorum. Please sit down," CJI Chandrachud admonished the lawyer, highlighting his zero-tolerance policy towards disruptions during proceedings.
This incident is not isolated, as CJI Chandrachud has been consistent in upholding discipline in the courtroom. During another hearing, he advised senior lawyer Huzaifa Ahmadi to switch to digital documentation by bringing an iPad or laptop instead of physical files. "Mr. Ahmadi, next time we would like to see you with a laptop or an iPad," remarked CJI Chandrachud, emphasizing the importance of modernizing legal practices for efficiency and convenience.
CJI Chandrachud's sharp remarks and firm stance on maintaining decorum are well-known among legal circles. In a similar incident in January, during a hearing, CJI Chandrachud told a lawyer that this is not a platform where any train comes and you board it. A lawyer tried to mention a plea related to judicial reforms. CJI Chandrachud asked if there is any petition on board? How can you mention it at 12 noon? Do you also just stand like this and file a petition in the Delhi High Court as well? CJI Chandrachud, getting angry, further said, "This is not a platform where any train comes, and you board it. Please ask your seniors how it's done."
