The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Tamil Nadu informed the Madras High Court that instructions had been issued to district election officers across the state to install extra closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in all strong rooms housing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) utilized during the Lok Sabha elections.
Advocate Niranjan Rajagopalan, representing the Election Commission of India, informed a vacation bench comprising Justices AD Jagadish Chandira and R Kalamathi that the newly installed CCTV cameras would be equipped with dedicated lines, routers, and supplementary power backup systems to prevent any operational failures.
"Additional CCTV cameras will continue to work even if the other cameras failed because of technical or, any other glitches."
The CEO submitted a report to the Court stating that on May 2, in response to complaints about malfunctioning CCTV cameras in the Nilgiris, Erode, and Tenkasi Lok Sabha constituencies in Tamil Nadu, he issued a directive to install additional CCTV cameras.
In response to these reported instances of malfunctioning, Advocate ML Ravi from the Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi approached the High Court and requested the establishment of an inquiry committee chaired by a retired High Court judge to investigate the matter.
