Centre Appoints Justice Harpreet Singh Brar as Permanent Judge of Punjab and Haryana HC

Recently, the Central government announced the appointment of Justice Harpreet Singh Brar as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

A notification to this effect was published on the website of the Ministry of Law & Justice.

"In exercise of the power conferred by clause (1) of Article 217 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Harpreet Singh Brar, Additional Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court, to be a Judge of that High Court with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office," the notification said.,

Justice Harpreet Singh Brar's name was initially recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium for appointment as a judge in July 2022. This recommendation was reiterated in March 2023, leading to his appointment as an additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
 
The Collegium has now recommended his elevation to a permanent position.
 
Currently, the Punjab and Haryana High Court operates with 52 judges, against a sanctioned strength of 85, resulting in 33 vacancies.
