Central Govt. appoints two lawyers as additional judges in Madras HC

On Friday, the Central government officially announced the selection of two lawyers, N Senthilkumar and G Arul Murugan, as additional judges for the Madras High Court. Their appointment is for a two-year duration, as stated in the government's notification.

Initially, the Madras High Court Collegium had put forward the names of N Senthilkumar and G Arul Murugan for promotion on August 3, 2022. Subsequently, on July 18 of this year, the Supreme Court Collegium issued a resolution confirming that both the State government and the Governor had given their consent to their elevation as judges.

In the case of Shri N. Senthilkumar's elevation, the July resolution emphasized that he belongs to a Scheduled Caste, and appointing him as a High Court judge would contribute to better representation of marginalized communities on the Bench. Therefore, the collegium believed that Shri N. Senthilkumar was a suitable candidate for elevation to the Madras High Court, whereas, regarding advocate Murugan's elevation, the Supreme Court resolution noted that he had practiced as a lawyer at the Madras High Court for over 24 years. Additionally, it highlighted that he belongs to the OBC category, and his appointment as a judge would enhance the representation of OBCs in the higher judiciary. Consequently, the collegium found advocate Murugan to be a suitable candidate for the appointment as a judge.

The news was also shared by the Union Minister of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal via tweet where he extended his best wishes for the two.
