Central Government Grants Permanent Status to Five Additional Judges of Allahabad HC

On Monday, the Central government approved the elevation of five additional judges of the Allahabad High Court to the position of permanent judges. This decision follows a recommendation put forth by the Supreme Court Collegium on March 12th.

The following are the judges who have been made permanent:

1. Justice Saurabh Srivastava;

2. Justice Om Prakash Shulda;

3. Justice Mohd. Azhar Husain Idrisi;

4. Justice Jyotsna Sharma; and

5. Justice Surendra Singh-I

All five judges were initially proposed for elevation as permanent judges by the High Court Collegium in May of the previous year. Following acceptance by the Chief Minister and Governor of Uttar Pradesh, these recommendations were subsequently forwarded to the Supreme Court Collegium for its deliberation.

However, the Supreme Court Collegium decided to defer its decision on the matter in September 2023.

 Subsequently, three months later, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud requested recent judgments delivered by the judges under consideration, which were then evaluated by a committee comprising two judges.
