Central Government Approves Ten Additional Judges of Punjab and Haryana HC as Permanent Judges

The Central government has approved the permanent appointment of ten additional judges serving in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

The following are the additional judges who have been made permanent:

- Justice Kuldeep Tiwari

- Justice Gurbir Singh

- Justice Deepak Gupta

- Justice Amarjot Bhatti

- Justice Ritu Tagore

- Justice Manisha Batra

- Justice Harpreet Kaur Jeewan

- Justice Sukhvinder Kaur

- Justice Sanjiv Berry; and

Justice Vikram Aggarwal.

The High Court's Collegium recommended the permanent appointment of the ten judges on October 6, 2023. However, the Chief Ministers and Governors of Punjab and Haryana had not provided their opinions on the matter. Subsequently, the Union Department of Justice forwarded the recommendation to the Supreme Court Collegium.

Supreme Court judges familiar with the workings of the respective High Court were consulted, and they agreed that all the judges are qualified and suitable for confirmation as permanent judges.

A two-judge committee evaluated the judgments of the candidates and rated them as "very good/good."

Following this, the Supreme Court Collegium thoroughly reviewed all the relevant documentation and on February 13, recommended the appointment of the ten judges as permanent judges of the High Court.

As of March 1, 2024, the Punjab and Haryana High Court operated with a total of 55 judges, whereas the sanctioned strength allowed for 85 judges. Among the 55 judges, 41 held permanent positions, while 14 served as additional judges.
