Case entirely based on hearsay, Manish Sisodia's lawyer tells court

Today, AAP arrested leader, Manish Sisodia brought to Delhi's Rouse Avenue court in an excise policy case. During an argument, Enforcement Directorate tells the court that there was a conspiracy behind framing the excise policy. ED further, submitted that the conspiracy was coordinated by Vijay Nair, along with others and the excise policy was brought out for extraordinary profit margin for wholesalers.

ED stated that accused Butchibabu Gorantla disclosed that there was a political understanding between CM Manish Sisodia and K Kavitha who also met Vijay Nair. Butchibabu is the former auditor of K Kavitha and is presently on bail.

Appearing for Manish Sisodia, Dayan Krishnan told the Rouse Avenue court that the time has come for "courts to come down heavily on such arrests,"

While seeking 10-day custody of Manish Sisodia to probe the alleged money laundering in the Delhi liquor policy case, Advocate Zoheb Hossain said that there was a conspiracy behind the policy coordinated by Vijay Nair, along with the 'South cartel'.

In response, explaining why it needs Mr Sisodia's custody for 10 days, the ED said it wants to follow where the money trail in the Delhi liquor policy case leads. The ED said the proceeds of the crime are worth at least ₹ 292 crores.

As the ED read out the allegations against Sisodia, it told the court that the South cartel, which comprises Telangana MLC K Kavitha, got control of 9 zones and became a serious stakeholder in the excise business in Delhi. Hossain reads out accused Butchibabu Gorantla, Kavitha's Hyderabad-based chartered accountant (CA) statement," There was a political understanding between K Kavitha and the Deputy Cm. Vijay Nair was trying to impress Kavitha..."

Mr Sisodia was arrested by the CBI earlier in its ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD). Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court sent him to Judicial Custody till March 20.

ED, last year, filed its first chargesheet in the case. The agency said it has, so far, undertaken nearly 200 search operations in this case after an FIR was filed, taking cognisance of the CBI case registered on the recommendation of Delhi's Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena.
