Calcutta HC was correct in refusing to stop ED probe in Bengal recruitment scam: SC

Today, the Supreme Court held that Calcutta High Court was correct in not refusing to stop an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe in the Bengal teachers' recruitment scam.

The top court was hearing an appeal by Abhishek Banerjee against the high court's order dismissing his plea to recall an order passed by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay which allowed the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to interrogate him in the alleged scam.

Earlier this month, the ED had summoned Abhishek Banerjee for questioning in connection with the same probe.

The court said the central probe agency has an independent right to probe the alleged scam and can continue its investigation.

Former education minister Partha Chatterjee, his alleged close associate Arpita Mukherjee and several senior officials have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the jobs for money scam.
