The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday refused BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari permission to conduct a four-day sit-in outside the Raj Bhavan. This sit-in was intended to protest the reported violence against his party workers following the conclusion of the recent Lok Sabha elections.
Justice Amrita Sinha advised Suvendu Adhikari, the Leader of Opposition (LoP), to seek an alternative location for his protest activities.
"The road in front of the main gates of Raj Bhavan cannot be allowed to be obstructed. Just because Trinamool Congress (TMC) protested at that site you too want to protest there? It cannot be allowed there," Justice Sinha told Adhikari's counsel Billwadal Bhattacharyya.
Adhikari approached the Court to contest the Kolkata Police's refusal to grant him permission for a protest outside the governor's house. He argued that the State Police had previously permitted the TMC to conduct a protest at the same location, emphasizing the need for equal treatment under the law.
In response, Advocate General Kishore Datta, representing the State, highlighted that the denial of permission to the BJP leader was solely an administrative decision made by the Police.
The State dismissed the argument that the BJP should be allowed to protest outside Raj Bhavan simply because the TMC had been permitted to do so previously.
After hearing arguments from both parties, the judge instructed Adhikari and the Police to explore an alternative location for the planned protest.
The case is scheduled to be reconsidered on June 21.
