Calcutta HC Receives PIL Challenging Prakash Raj and Arundhati Roy's Remarks on Hindu Community and Government

A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been brought to the attention of the Calcutta High Court, highlighting concerns about the remarks made by actor Prakash Raj and celebrated author Arundhati Roy that have been perceived as derogatory towards the Hindu community. Additionally, they referred to the Central government as a "Hindu Fascist Enterprise."

A division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya was moved by advocate Mita Banerjee highlighting the interview given by Roy to an international news channel in June 2023.

Advocate Banerjee highlighted to the judges, "In an interview with Al Jazeera this June, author Roy stated that India has transformed into a Hindu Fascist Enterprise. Such statements, particularly on a platform like Al Jazeera associated with the Al Qaeda, led by Osama Bin Laden, raise significant concerns."

She also emphasized that actor Prakash Raj echoed similar sentiments on the social media platform Twitter, which is now known as X, reinforcing the concerns raised about such assertions regarding the Hindu community and the government.

"Their comments come from responsible citizens, yet they've caused deep offense. As Hindus, we refute the label of fascism attributed to us. Our upbringing instills the belief that upholding our Dharma ensures its protection, much like the revered figures of Rama and Krishna. Hence, we urge guidance to remove these remarks from social media platforms, including Twitter," added the advocate.

The advocate additionally emphasized that both Roy and Prakash lack grounds to label the Indian government as a Hindu Fascist Enterprise, given its substantial support from the majority of the population. During the hearing, the bench observed that the petitioner hadn't effectively served the respondents with the necessary documents or notifications.
