In a major development in the rape-murder case of a junior doctor at a Kolkata medical college, the Calcutta High Court has allowed the investigators to conduct a lie-detector test on the key accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer spotted on CCTV leaving the suspected crime scene.
The CBI is expected to carry out the polygraph test tomorrow, as the court has deferred the case's hearing to August 29.
The CBI has also questioned former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh extensively over the weekend, while Trinamool Congress MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy stirred controversy by calling for the interrogation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal. This prompted the police to issue a notice to the MP, which he has now challenged in the High Court, with a hearing scheduled for tomorrow.
Meanwhile, another Trinamool leader, Kunal Ghosh, criticized Roy for doubting the police, even though he agreed with the protest against the crime. The victim’s parents expressed their disillusionment with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of inaction despite her public calls for justice. The father voiced his distrust, questioning the effectiveness of the state's welfare schemes, given the police’s handling of the case.
The junior doctor's body was discovered on August 9 in the seminar hall of the hospital. With suspicions of multiple perpetrators involved, the Supreme Court has now taken suo motu cognizance of the case, and a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud will hear the matter.
