On Monday, the Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to provide all documents pertaining to the arrest of four individuals involved in the August 27 march to the state secretariat, Nabanna, which was held to protest the rape and murder of a doctor at R.G. Kar Hospital.
The court questioned the rationale behind the arrests and their subsequent release just 24 hours later. It also sought clarification on whether the police adhered to proper procedures during their detention.
The state informed the court that the arrests were preventive measures by the Howrah city police, who anticipated that the individuals might incite significant disturbances during the protest march to Nabanna organized by the 'Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj'.
Justice Rajarshi Bharadwaj questioned the nature of the specific disturbances anticipated and inquired about the reason for the individuals' release 24 hours prior to the August 27 protest march.
The court has ordered the state to submit all relevant documents concerning the arrests by Tuesday. Rajdeep Majumdar, representing the petitioners, claimed the arrests were unlawful and requested that the court issue an order for compensation and take action against those responsible for the detention of the four individuals.
