Calcutta High Court judge Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, known for his notable rulings on various issues, has announced his intention to resign, generating significant attention. While speculation arises about potential future endeavors, including politics, Justice Gangopadhyay declined to directly address such inquiries.
"I will resign from the post of Justice of Calcutta High Court on Tuesday," he told reporters, and he added that he would address all inquiries after submitting his resignation.
In response to Kunal Ghosh's invitation to enter politics, Justice Gangopadhyay commented, "He has made several statements against me in his capacity as a political spokesperson, but I hold him in high regard as a person. He is a good human being."
Justice Gangopadhyay stated his intention to submit his resignation to the President of India on Tuesday. Copies of his resignation will also be sent to the Chief Justice of India and the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court.
Justice Gangopadhyay had issued several directives instructing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate allegations of irregularities in the recruitment processes of teaching and non-teaching staff in state government-sponsored and aided schools.
Earlier this year, in a remarkable turn of events, Justice Gangopadhyay accused his colleague, Justice Soumen Sen, of working for a political party. This accusation came after Justice Sen, who presided over a division bench, issued a stay on a single-judge order directing a CBI probe into irregularities in medical admissions. The matter is currently pending in the Supreme Court.
Justice Sen had stayed an order issued by Justice Gangopadhyay, which directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to investigate allegations of fake caste certificates being issued in Bengal.
