On Tuesday, the Calcutta High Court granted permission to two Hindu organizations, namely Anjani Putra Sena and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, to conduct their traditional Ram Navami Shobha Yatra (processions) in Howrah district on April 17th.
Justice Jay Sengupta, a single judge, granted permission to the organizations to continue their processions along the routes they have traditionally used for the past 15 years.
Due to violent clashes between Hindus and Muslims along this route leading to Howrah Maidan last year, the West Bengal government had proposed an alternative route this year to prevent similar incidents.
Additionally, the state emphasized that due to the communal violence last year, an ongoing investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has resulted in the arrest of over 11 individuals from the Howrah area, where the procession is scheduled to take place.
However, the organizations declined to accept the suggestion for an alternative route and instead approached single-judge Justice Sengupta. The court granted permission for the procession, stipulating that the number of participants in the rally must not exceed 200 individuals.
"There shall be no provocative slogans against any community," the judge ordered.
Further, the court has also suggested that the state take the help of the Central Forces to ensure law and order in the state.
A detailed copy of the order is yet to be made available.
