Calcutta HC directs 32,000 Teachers to Submit Affidavits Over Alleged Bribery in 2014 Recruitment

On Wednesday, the Calcutta High Court issued a directive for the 32,000 candidates hired in primary schools following the 2014 teachers’ eligibility test. They've been asked to submit affidavits by January 18,stating their views on the allegation that they had secured their jobs by paying money.

A division bench, headed by Justice Soumen Sen, scheduled the next hearing for January 20.

The Supreme Court's two division benches had instructed the Calcutta High Court on how to handle cases concerning reported irregularities in school recruitments. The directive from one of the two division benches of the Supreme Court instructed the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court to establish a dedicated division bench specifically designated to address cases involving purported irregularities in the hiring of teachers and other personnel in government-supported secondary schools throughout Bengal. Earlier, Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay from the high court had passed an order revoking the appointments of the 32,000 individuals in primary schools.

These candidates, now mandated to submit affidavits by January 18, were affected by this decision. Following the state's appeal against the division bench's decision, the Supreme Court referred the matter back to the high court for reconsideration by the division bench. Upon Justice Talukdar's retirement, the case was reassigned to a division bench led by Justice Sen.

In a recent development on Wednesday, the bench determined that all 32,000 candidates involved should be afforded an opportunity to present their defense and consequently requested their affidavits.
