Lawyers from the Calcutta High Court's bar association have reversed their decision to boycott Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay's court following a visit by the judge to the association's office and discussions with the protesting lawyers. Bar association secretary Biswabrata Basu Mallik confirmed that Justice Gangopadhyay visited room number 2 of the bar and urged collaboration, leading to the withdrawal of the boycott.
The initial conflict arose when the bar association wrote to Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam, expressing their refusal to attend Justice Gangopadhyay's bench. They claimed that a lawyer had been mistreated by the judge and sent to civil custody for contempt of court during a hearing related to the multi-crore recruitment scam in West Bengal government schools.
Justice Gangopadhyay is presiding over a series of petitions related to the recruitment scam. The Calcutta High Court's order, in which the single-judge bench sent lawyer Prosenjit Mukherjee to civil imprisonment for three days, triggered protests within the bar association. Mukherjee, who represented the West Bengal Madrasah Service Commission in a case regarding compassionate grounds appointments, was later released from custody after a division bench, comprising Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharyya, stayed the single bench's order.
Mukherjee explained that he was accused of a contemptuous act and taken into custody by the sheriff when he mentioned the modification of the single bench's order. After his release, Mukherjee submitted an application to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, leading to the formation of a bench that stayed the single bench's order.
The situation took a positive turn on Thursday when Justice Gangopadhyay visited the bar association's office, engaging in discussions with the lawyers and addressing their concerns. The decision to boycott his court was subsequently withdrawn. Notably, during this visit, Justice Gangopadhyay also spoke with Prosenjit Mukherjee, who was present in the room.
