BRS leader K Kavitha challenges arrest by ED in Delhi liquor policy case

In a significant turn of events, Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader K Kavitha has taken her legal battle to the Supreme Court by challenging her recent arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case.

The 46-year-old Member of Legislative Council (MLC), who is the daughter of BRS chief and former Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekar Rao, asserts that her arrest is "illegal" and a result of a "fabricated case."

The sequence of events unfolded after the Enforcement Directorate conducted searches at Kavitha's residence in Hyderabad, leading to her subsequent arrest. Following her arrest, Kavitha was produced before a Delhi court where the ED requested custody for questioning till March 23.

Despite the probe agency's plea for a 10-day custody, the court granted permission for her relatives, including her brother KTR and husband Anil D, to meet her for half an hour every day during her remand period.

In response to her arrest, Kavitha vehemently proclaimed its illegality and vowed to fight against it. "It's an illegal arrest, it's a fabricated case, I will fight it out," she asserted during her appearance at Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court. Furthermore, her legal team confirmed the filing of a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging her arrest.

The crux of Kavitha's defense lies in the assertion that her arrest by the federal probe agency contradicts the interim protection granted to her by the Supreme Court in the case. It is alleged that Kavitha, as a key member of the 'South Group,' has been implicated in accusations of facilitating kickbacks of Rs 100 crore to Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in exchange for a substantial share of liquor licenses in the national capital.
