BREAKING| Centre Notifies Appointment Of Justice Sanjiv Khanna As Next CJI

Today, the Central Government has officially announced the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the next Chief Justice of India.

"In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President, after consultation with Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November, 2024,"  said Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister for Law & Justice.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna will take office as the 51st Chief Justice of India on November 11, with a tenure of nearly seven months, ending on May 13, 2025. His appointment follows a recommendation by outgoing CJI DY Chandrachud, who proposed Justice Khanna, the second senior-most judge of the Supreme Court, as his successor. 

Justice Khanna was elevated to the Supreme Court from the Delhi High Court on January 18, 2019.

Early Life and Education

Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna hails from a family with a strong legal background. His father, Dev Raj Khanna, was a well-known advocate. Justice Khanna pursued his law degree from the prestigious Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, where he was known for his academic excellence and keen interest in constitutional law.

Judicial Career

Justice Khanna began his illustrious career in law by enrolling as an advocate on July 28, 1983. Over the years, he built a reputation for his expertise in civil, criminal, and constitutional law. His legal practice was marked by a commitment to pro bono work and a deep sense of social justice.

Recently the Supreme Court of India has issued a list of committees formed to manage various affairs in the Supreme Court. Out of 26 committees Justice Khanna heads 8 most important committees. He is heading, the Finance Committee,  Departmental Promotion Committee of Gazetted Officers, Security Committee, Building & Precinct Supervisory Committee, Committee for Supreme Court Rules, Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee,  Bar Grievance Redressal Committee, Committee for Model Case Flow Management Rules for Supreme Court of India and to suggest a plan for reduction of arrears in the Supreme Court of India. 

Elevation to the Supreme Court
