Bombay HC Urges State to Ensure Smooth Rollout of Revised Ladli Behna Scheme

The Bombay High Court has directed the state government to facilitate the seamless implementation of the Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladlii Behna Scheme, emphasizing that all eligible women should be able to access its benefits without hurdles.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Devendra Upadhyaya and Justice Amit Borkar was hearing a PIL filed by the Prameya Welfare Foundation, which highlighted difficulties faced by women in filling and uploading applications under the scheme.

Responding to these concerns, the state's Deputy Secretary informed the court that steps had been taken to address these issues. Earlier, 11 agencies from various departments were engaged to assist applicants, leading to the successful submission of 2,43,62,330 out of 2,51,66,912 applications. Approximately 90,000 applications were rejected for failing to meet eligibility criteria.

The petitioner, however, voiced apprehensions about potential challenges arising from revisions to the scheme. While disposing of the petition, the court underscored the importance of ensuring that all eligible women can exercise their rights under the revised scheme and directed the state to take necessary measures to achieve this goal.

We, while taking note of the steps taken by the State for appropriate implementation of the scheme and to facilitate the eligible women to be able to make their applications, provide that in case of any change or alteration which may require fresh applications to be filled in by the eligible women, the State shall take appropriate steps so that all eligible women are able to exercise their right of seeking benefit under the altered/new scheme,” the order reads.
