The Bombay High Court has approved bail for Sukesh Chandrasekhar in a 2015 cheating case filed by the city police's Economic Offences Wing. Despite this decision, Chandrasekhar will remain in Delhi's Tihar Jail due to his involvement in multiple other cases.
Justice Manish Pitale, in his recent ruling, highlighted that Chandrasekhar has been held in custody for over seven years without trial commencement in the current case.
Sukesh Chandrasekhar was arrested in May 2015 under the Indian Penal Code and the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act. The charges stemmed from allegations that he had established a fictitious firm named 'Lion Oak Indian' and initiated multiple investment schemes promising a monthly return of 20%, along with incentives such as Tata Nano cars and gold coins.
Sukesh Chandrasekhar, accused of accumulating ₹19 crore through this Ponzi scheme, argued in his plea that the maximum sentence upon conviction is seven years, a period he has already served awaiting trial in jail. After his bail application was denied by the special MPID court, he approached the Bombay High Court for relief.
