Bombay HC Denies Default Bail to 5 Accused in Bhima Koregaon Violence Case

The Bombay High Court on Friday rejected the default bail applications of Surendra Gadling, Mahesh Raut, Rona Wilson, Sudhir Dhawale, and Shoma Sen in the Bhima Koregaon violence case.

A Division Bench of Justices AS Gadkari and Shyam C Chandak issued the order on Friday, rejecting the pleas of the five accused who had challenged the 2022 special court decisions denying them default bail.

The five accused were arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) in June 2018. Gadling appealed against a special court's order from June 28, 2022, which denied his default bail application, while Raut, Wilson, Dhawale, and Sen challenged a similar order from June 26, 2022.

Raut was granted regular bail by the Bombay High Court last year, but the High Court stayed the order for a week after the NIA requested time to file an appeal with the Supreme Court.

The NIA subsequently appealed to the Supreme Court, which extended the stay on Raut's bail further. Raut, who was arrested in June 2018, has remained in custody since then.

Sen was granted regular bail by the Supreme Court on April 5. Gadling, Wilson, and Dhawale continue to be in custody.
