Bombay Bar Association Makes History: Six Female Members Elected to Standing Committee

The Bombay Bar Association (BBA), one of the country's most established bar associations, recently achieved a significant milestone by electing six female members to its standing committee, marking the first time in its history that women have held such a substantial representation among the twenty committee members.

The elections occurred on February 29 of this year, with the newly elected committee assuming their roles on March 4, 2024.

The six female members are:

  1. Advocate Kainaz Irani

  2. Advocate Mahek Bookwala

  3. Advocate Anita Castellino

  4. Advocate Sneha Phene

  5. Advocate Tanmayi Rajadhyaksha

  6. Advocate Ankita Singhania

Nitin Thakker, a senior advocate, will continue to lead the Bombay Bar Association (BBA) as its president, while Venkatesh Dhond, also a senior advocate, will serve as its Vice President.

After amending its bylaws in February 2024 to reserve five seats for women, the Bombay Bar Association (BBA) achieved a historic milestone by appointing more than five women to its standing committee for the first time. This amendment, proposed by President Thakker, was approved by the association, with only one female member opposing the proposal.

The objective behind the amendment was to enhance female participation in the administration of the association. In the last four committees, the number of female members ranged from zero to three.
