Today, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a BJP candidate from the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat and a former judge, took action by filing a petition in the Calcutta High Court claiming that the police had overstepped their bounds by charging him with attempted murder.
Justice Jay Sengupta, presiding over the court where the matter was raised, has ordered that the petition will be heard on Tuesday.
Rajdeep Majumder, the lawyer representing Gangopadhyay, argued before the court, alleging malicious intent and excessive action by the police. He contended that the FIR was filed with the aim of obstructing Gangopadhyay's election campaign.
Majumder specified that Gangopadhyay was charged under Section 307 (attempt to murder). Gangopadhyay, who stepped down from his position as a judge of the Calcutta High Court in March, is currently a BJP candidate contesting from the Tamluk Lok Sabha constituency.
It's reported that an incident occurred where individuals, purportedly affiliated with a teachers' organization, protested against Gangopadhyay when he went to submit his nomination papers for the elections.
