On Friday, a Bengaluru court ordered Janata Dal (Secular) Member of Parliament (MP) Prajwal Revanna to be remanded in custody for 7 days. This decision came in light of the ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into allegations of sexual abuse against him.
Judge KN Shivakumar issued the order to remand Revanna to SIT custody until June 6. This decision was made in response to an application filed by the SIT.
Allegations of sexual abuse against Prajwal Revanna surfaced following the circulation of over 2,900 videos depicting the sexual assault of multiple women across various platforms, including social media.
On April 28, an FIR was lodged against Prajwal Revanna and his father HD Revanna at the Holenaraseepur town police station in Hassan district. The charges under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (insult to modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) were filed in connection with the case.
The criminal case was initiated based on a complaint filed by one of the victims. The investigation is being conducted by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh.
Amid the ensuing outrage and political upheaval, Prajwal Revanna reportedly fled to Germany shortly after the Lok Sabha polls in the State on April 26. However, he is said to have returned to India during the early hours of March 31 and was promptly arrested upon his arrival.
Just prior to his return, Prajwal Revanna filed for anticipatory bail in three cases related to the sexual abuse allegations against him in a Bengaluru court.
