On Wednesday, a Bengaluru court denied bail to Janata Dal (Secular) Member of Parliament (MP) Prajwal Revanna in the first sexual abuse case filed against him.
The order was passed by MP/MLA Special Sessions Court Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat, who rejected Revanna's bail plea.
The sexual abuse allegations against Revanna surfaced after over 2,900 videos depicting the sexual assault of several women were circulated online.
On April 28, a first information report (FIR) was filed against Prajwal Revanna and his father, HD Revanna, at the Holenaraseepur town police station in Hassan district. The FIR includes charges under Sections 354A (sexual harassment), 354D (stalking), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 509 (insult to the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Subsequently, Section 370 (rape) was also added to the complaint.
The criminal case was initiated based on a complaint filed by one of the victims. An SIT led by senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer BK Singh investigated the case.
Amid public outrage, Prajwal Revanna fled to Germany shortly after the April 26 Lok Sabha polls in the state.
He was arrested upon his return to India on May 31 and was placed in SIT custody until June 10. In connection with the second rape case, he was in SIT custody from June 13 to 18. For the third rape case, the SIT was granted custody until June 24, and for the fourth case, Revanna remains in SIT custody until June 29.
