The Bar Council of India (BCI) has welcomed the Union Government’s decision to reconsider the Advocates (Amendment) Bill, 2025, following concerns raised by the legal community.
In a press statement, BCI Chairman Senior Advocate Manan Kumar Mishra lauded the government’s initiative, emphasizing that the move to "conclude the consultation process and refine the revised draft for further discussion" demonstrates a commitment to transparency and inclusivity.
The Ministry of Law & Justice formally communicated its decision to the BCI through a letter (D.O. No. IC-14/2/2025-IC) dated February 22, 2025. This step follows extensive feedback from legal professionals nationwide.
According to the BCI, the Council has been in regular discussions with Union Law Minister Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, who has assured that "all contentious issues will be carefully reviewed and appropriately addressed before finalizing the Bill." He further affirmed that the amendments would uphold the autonomy, independence, and dignity of the legal profession.
Given these assurances, the BCI has appealed to all Bar Associations and legal professionals to suspend any planned protests or strikes, noting the government’s "constructive and receptive" stance in addressing their concerns.
Additionally, the Council has requested Bar Associations that had declared abstentions to resume court work starting Monday, February 24, 2025.
Reiterating its dedication to protecting the interests of the legal community, the BCI affirmed that it will maintain active engagement with the government to ensure that any revisions to the Advocates Act, 1961, are made "only after comprehensive consultation and in the best interests of the legal fraternity."
