The Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh plans to write to the Lucknow commissioner of police (CP), seeking comprehensive information regarding 112 advocates identified by the joint CP.
The report alleges their participation in activities such as land-grabbing and issuing threats. However, crucial details, including the registration numbers of these advocates with the Bar Council, are conspicuously absent from the list.
During a meeting in Prayagraj on Sunday, the Council noted that the list lacks the names of serious offenders, while including individuals involved in marital disputes.
“The list of 112 advocates prepared by the Joint CP does not have relevant details, including registration numbers,” said Prashant Singh, co-chairman, Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh.
“The Bar Council will send a letter to the commissioner of police, Lucknow, seeking complete details of all 112 advocates mentioned in the list,” Singh added.
During the meeting, Bar Council members reviewed the list and identified advocates whose names were included despite having marital disputes, Singh added.
Singh emphasized, "Even the names of one-time offenders are included in the list, while actual land grabbers are conspicuously absent." The Bar Council has resolved to take action against advocates accused of land grabbing, pending verification of the allegations.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law & Order) Upendra Agarwal has submitted a report to the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh listing 112 lawyers against whom his office received 149 complaints. To address these complaints, a special cell has been established at the JCP’s office.
The report includes 92 complaints concerning illegal possession of land and 57 complaints related to issuing threats. Based on the findings, the JCP has recommended the cancellation of licenses issued by the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh for practicing law.
