Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Satyendar Jain, a former minister of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Delhi. Jain was granted bail on medical grounds after being admitted to the ICU of Delhi's Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan (LNJP) Hospital due to breathing problems.
Satyendar Jain had been in Tihar jail since his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in May of the previous year, in connection with a money laundering case.
During the bail plea hearing in the Supreme Court, arguments were made on behalf of Jain and the ED. Senior advocate AM Singhvi, representing Jain, stated that the bail plea was based on humanitarian grounds.
He mentioned that Jain had lost 33 kilograms and was on a surgery list for vertebrae. Additionally, it was stated that Jain, being a Jain by religion, had been fasting and not consuming food, which contributed to his weight loss.
On the other hand, the ED expressed its distrust in the medical reports from LNJP Hospital and suggested that Jain should be examined by a panel of doctors at AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). Singhvi countered this by stating that the reports were from GB Pant Hospital, certifying that Jain required immediate medical attention.
The Supreme Court considered Jain's medical condition and granted him interim bail for a period of six weeks on medical grounds.
This decision allows Jain to receive the necessary medical treatment outside of jail during the bail period.
