Attorney General KK Venugopal Tells Supreme Court that his Tenure is upto Sep. 30

Attorney General for India Mr. KK Venugopal, told the Constitution Bench today on 07.09.2022 that his tenure will come to an end on 30th Sep this year. The AG made this statement while appearing in the case of Delhi Government and LG dispute. The 5-judge bench led by Justice Chandrachud scheduled a hearing of the case and fixed the next date of hearing tentatively on October 11, but the AG said, "There is a little problem. My tenure is only up-to September 30."

In response to that Justice Chandrachud told the AG in a lighter vein, that "You don't under estimate the powers of this Court under Article 142", Justice Chandrachud suggested that the Court can nevertheless require his assistance in the matter by exercising special powers. The Solicitor General Tushar Mehta then joined the conversation with a lighter vein remark, "I can be the petitioner for that". On June 29, AG Venugopal's term was extended by three more months by the Central Government.

Reports suggest that KK Venugopal had requested the Government not to further extend his tenure due to health issues, and the Government requested him to continue for three more months. Widely respected as a constitutional law expert, Venugopal was appointed AG on July 1, 201, 2017 for a three-year term, after the resignation of the then AG Mukul Rohatgi. He was given an extension of one year in 2020 and 2021 each.
