ASI Report Confirms Pre-existing Hindu Temple at Gyanvapi Site

The report from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on the Gyanvapi case, released on January 25, revealed that a substantial Hindu temple existed at the location before the construction of the present mosque structure.

On December 18, 2023, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) presented its report to the Varanasi district court in a sealed envelope. The court granted permission for the release of the findings on January 24, just two days after the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.

At the heart of this dispute between the Hindu and Muslim communities is the 'Wazukhana' area of the mosque—a fountain that the Hindu side claimed was a 'Shivling'.

On January 25, following the disclosure of the findings to the relevant parties, Vishnu Shankar Jain, the lawyer representing the Hindu side, remarked, "The ASI has reported that numerous inscriptions were observed on both the current and preexisting structures during the survey."

"A total of 34 inscriptions were recorded during the present survey, and 32 stamped pages were taken. These are in fact inscriptions on the stone of a preexisting Hindu temple which have been reused during the construction and repair of the existing structure. They include inscriptions in the Devanagari, Grantha, Telugu and Kannada scripts," Jain added.
