ASG Aishwarya Bhati appointed as member of Global consultation group for the Commonwealth

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of India, Aishwarya Bhati, has been appointed as a member of the global consultation group within the Commonwealth. This international organization is dedicated to the promotion of democracy, good governance, peace, and the rule of law.

She is the second Indian to be a part of this global military justice body.

Earlier, Navdeep Singh, advocate at the Punjab and Haryana High Court, was appointed as a member of the five-person Military Justice Advisory Committee established by the Commonwealth Secretariat.

Aishwarya Bhati is recognized as a Senior Advocate, currently practicing in the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court. She became a counsel for a petitioner in a landmark case that secured permanent commission rights for women armed forces officers.

The Commonwealth Consists of 56 member nations, and the Commonwealth Secretariat is currently contemplating the development of model military justice principles.

Efforts to improve military justice have seen progress previously, notably with the United Nations Principles Governing the Administration of Justice Through Military Tribunals, also known as 'the Decaux Principles.' These principles were further refined during a meeting held at Yale Law School in March 2018, attended by international jurists and UN representatives, leading to the creation of the Yale Draft. These principles primarily aim to ensure the independence, competence, and impartiality of military justice processes.
