Aam Aadmi Party leaders are set to greet Arvind Kejriwal as he walks out of Tihar jail today, having been granted bail in a corruption case related to the Delhi liquor policy.
The Delhi Chief Minister was granted bail by a Delhi court after his lawyer successfully argued that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had provided no evidence against him.
In a show of solidarity, AAP will also address a pressing issue affecting the capital. Prior to Mr. Kejriwal's release this evening, the party will present a united front to protest against the ongoing water shortage in Delhi. Water Minister Atishi, alongside Mr. Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, will visit Raj Ghat where Atishi will begin an indefinite hunger strike.
The severe water crisis has been exacerbated by a heatwave with temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The Delhi government has approached the Supreme Court, alleging that neighboring Haryana is obstructing the flow of water into the national capital.
Atishi in her appeal said, "Till the time Haryana doesn't release water into the Yamuna, the water shortage will continue in Delhi. Munak Canal is receiving very little water and on the other hand, Wazirabad Barrage is receiving no water. The water from Yamuna goes to water treatment and is then resent to Delhi's public after re-treatment. But there is no water in Yamuna, the reason why the supply is halted. I can just stand before the Haryana government with folded hands and appeal to save the lives of Delhi's public.
Around 4 pm today, Atishi and other AAP leaders will gather at Tihar jail to greet Arvind Kejriwal as he walks out of prison.
Mr. Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on March 21 on money laundering charges linked to the formulation of the Delhi liquor policy for 2021-22. This policy was later scrapped after concerns were raised by the Lieutenant Governor. The ED has claimed that funds received by Mr. Kejriwal from liquor sellers were used to finance the AAP's campaign in Goa, as he serves as the party's convenor.
Mr. Kejriwal and the AAP have consistently maintained that the Centre has been misusing its agencies to harass the Opposition with false cases.
Yesterday, a judge ordered Mr. Kejriwal's release on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh, but imposed several conditions, including that he must not hamper the investigation or influence witnesses. The judge also directed Mr. Kejriwal to appear before the court whenever required and to fully cooperate with the investigation.
