Arvind Kejriwal Appears Before Rouse Avenue Court as ED Proceedings Commence

Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi and leader of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), was brought before the magistrate at Rouse Avenue Court by the Enforcement Directorate. This was in relation to his involvement in the Delhi excise policy case, where custody proceedings were initiated.

Special Judge Kaveri Baweja is presiding over the Enforcement Directorate's request for the custody of the Chief Minister.

Following a late-night search at his residence on Thursday, Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on the same day. Prior to this, the Delhi High Court had denied him interim protection from arrest.

The High Court's division bench, comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain, stated that they were not inclined to grant any interim protection at this juncture.

Following the denial of interim protection by the High Court, the Enforcement Directorate conducted a search at the Delhi CM's residence, leading to his subsequent arrest. Arvind Kejriwal initially challenged his arrest by filing a plea in the Supreme Court, but later decided to withdraw it.

The Enforcement Directorate's investigation into money laundering originates from a case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 17, 2022. This case is related to purported irregularities associated with the Delhi Excise Policy for the fiscal year 2021-22.

The CBI initiated its case following a complaint lodged by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on July 20, 2022. The complaint alleges a criminal conspiracy involving AAP leaders, including former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, and other unidentified private individuals or entities during the formulation stage of the Delhi Excise Policy.

It has been alleged that the conspiracy originated from deliberate loopholes intentionally incorporated or created within the policy. These loopholes were purportedly designed to benefit certain licensees and individuals involved in the conspiracy following the conclusion of the tender process.

On March 15, 2024, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also arrested K Kavitha, the daughter of Bharat Rashtra Samiti legislator and former Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, in connection with the same case.
