Arrested Suspects in Jharkhand Tourist Gang Rape Case Appear in Court

Three individuals who were arrested in connection with the gang rape of a Spanish tourist in Jharkhand's Dumka district were presented before a court on Sunday.

The woman from Spain was reportedly subjected to gang rape at Kurumahat in the Hansdiha police station area, situated approximately 300 km from the state capital Ranchi. The incident occurred on Friday night while she was camping in a tent with her husband, as per police reports.

Case Brief -

According to Reuters, the police discovered the couple, both Spanish citizens, around 11 pm local time on March 1, on a roadside. They appeared to have suffered injuries consistent with a physical assault.

The woman's statement has been recorded under Section 164 of the CrPC, the police said. Addressing a press conference, superintendent of police Pitamber Singh Kherwar said a medical test was conducted on the woman, and it confirmed rape. According to Reuters, Pitamber Singh Kherwar did not provide specific details about the crime or identify the victims. However, the two individuals informed authorities that they had been subjected to an incident involving seven men, resulting in their modesty being outraged.

“They raped me, they took turns while some watched and they stayed like that for about two hours,” the woman, who has joint Brazilian-Spanish nationality, told Spanish TV channel Antena 3 in the interview.

The couple recounted in a video interview on Saturday that the men raped the woman and repeatedly assaulted her husband. They further explained that they had chosen to camp near the location of the attack as they were unable to find nearby hotels.

Earlier, the couple had posted a video on their joint Instagram account, where they share images of their worldwide motorcycle travels, to nearly 200,000 followers. However, the video detailing their ordeal is no longer accessible.

Dumka's Deputy Commissioner A. Dodde stated, "The embassy and chief secretary have been notified. The couple is currently under protection here." The woman, aged approximately 28, and her 64-year-old husband arrived in Dumka from Bangladesh on two motorcycles and were traveling to Nepal via Bihar.
