The Bombay High Court has granted bail to former Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Anil Deshmukh in a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Deshmukh was arrested in November last year and had filed bail before the high court after a special PMLA Court had rejected his bail application. The bail application of Deshmukh came to be decided in the light of the order of the Apex Court, whereby the Apex Court had asked the High Court to decide the Bail plea expeditiously as it was pending for six months.
It was argued by his lawyers Vikram Chaudhari and Aniket Nikam that considering the senior NCP leader's age (72), health, and the fact that he had no criminal antecedents, he should be granted bail.
Although Deskhmukh has been granted bail, but he would not come out of jail since he is in custody for one another case of ED. The ED had booked him after the CBI registered a corruption case against him following allegations made by former Mumbai Police commissioner Param Bir Singh, claiming that the NCP leader misused his official position and collected ₹4.7 crores from various bars and restaurants in Mumbai.
