Allahabad HC Rejects Atiq Ahmed's Son's Plea for Jail Security, Citing Life Threat Apprehensions

The Allahabad High Court rejected Ali Ahmed's plea for increased security in jail, citing concerns about potential threats to his life. The petition was filed by Ali Ahmed, the son of Atiq Ahmed, a former gangster who later entered politics.

Ali Ahmed, in his petition, had urged the court to consider conducting the proceedings of his case via video conferencing owing to security concerns.

Additionally, he had expressed his willingness to undergo interrogation at the Naini Central Jail in Prayagraj, where he is currently held, if required for the proceedings. During the court proceedings, despite the revision of the cause list, no representative appeared on behalf of the petitioner when the case was brought before the court.

Noting the absence of representation, a division bench comprising Justices Vivek Kumar Birla and Vinod Diwakar, in their ruling dated December 13, observed that the writ petition sought protection for the petitioner's life and liberty from the state respondents. However, due to the lack of prosecution in these proceedings, the court dismissed the petition.

Previously, a division bench of the court, through an order dated June 20, had granted a two-week extension to the petitioner's counsel to submit a supplementary affidavit. This document was meant to outline the specific concerns and apprehensions that formed the basis of the initial petition.

Ali Ahmed, in his petition, had specifically requested heightened security measures, particularly when court-issued warrants required his appearance before the concerned court. His name had surfaced in connection to the investigation of the Umesh Pal murder case, prompting these security concerns.

Umesh Pal, along with his two police security guards, Sandeep Nishad and Raghvendra Singh, tragically lost their lives on February 24 in a shooting incident outside Pal's residence situated in the Dhoomanganj police station area of Prayagraj.

Following a complaint filed by Pal's wife, Jaya, a case was registered at the Dhoomanganj police station against Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, two sons, associates Guddu Muslim and Ghulam, along with nine other individuals.

In April, during a media interaction while being escorted by police personnel to a medical college in Prayagraj for a checkup, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were fatally shot at close range by three individuals posing as journalists.
