After Gujarat and Telangana, now Madras bar opposes collegium decision to transfer of Justice T. Raja

The Madras High Court Advocates Association has written to the Chief Justice of India opposing the proposed transfer of Justice T Raja to the Rajasthan High Court. Justice T. Raja is presently serving as Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court.

In a letter written to the CJI, the MHCAA stated in the latter that the "imminent" transfer recommendation does not bode well for the judiciary and will be perceived as a "disincentive for efficiency and judicial decency."

The Bar Association said in the letter that from the time Justice Raja took over as the Acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court on September 22 this year, he has maintained the highest decorum. Justice Raja is a people's judge, who renders justice irrespective of who is arguing the case. The MHCAA also said that the transfer order just about six months left before Justice Raja's retirement from service, was "bad news for the judiciary."

Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name be transferred to Rajasthan High Court on 16.11.2022 along with Justice A Abhishek Reddy and Nikhil S. Kariel to Patna High Court.

The Telangana and Gujarat High Court Bar are already on strike against the Collegium's decision.

A delegation representing the Gujarat High Court bar is even slated to meet the Chief Justice in person tomorrow to request him to withdraw the decision to transfer Justice Kariel.
