4 times MP Prabhunath Singh convicted by SC reversing High Court's acquittal

Former RJD MP Prabhunath Singh has got a big blow from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court has convicted Prabhunath Singh in the double murder case. In this case, the lower court had acquitted Prabhunath Singh and Patna High Court also upheld the acquittal but the Supreme Court convicted Prabhunath and asked him to appear in the court on 1st September 2023.

A three judges bench of Justices SK Kaul,  AS Oka, and Vikram Nath of the Supreme Court has convicted Prabhunath Singh in the double murder case. The SC has ordered the DGP and Chief Secretary of Bihar to bring Prabhunath in the court on 1st September. On 1st September there will be arguments on the sentence of Prabhunath Singh. Presently Singh is confined in Hazaribagh Jail in another murder case

Prabhunath Singh has remained MP from Bihar's Maharajganj Lok Sabha seat 4 times, is accused of killing 47-year-old Daroga Rai and 18-year-old Rajendra Rai in 1995 near a polling booth in Masrakh. It was alleged that both did not vote for the candidate supported by Prabhunath Singh, so both were murdered.

After the complaint of threatening the witnesses by the brother of the deceased, the case was transferred from Chhapra to Patna where the trial took place. The Trial court had acquitted Prabhunath Singh due to lack of evidence. In 2012, the Patna High Court upheld the decision of the lower court. After this, Harendra Rai, brother of the deceased Rajendra Rai, challenged the decisions before the Supreme Court.

In the Supreme Court, the bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Justice AS Oak and Justice Vikram Nath has convicted Prabhunath Singh, reversing the decision of the High Court. The court said that there is enough evidence against Singh. The Supreme Court upheld the acquittal of the rest of the accused in the case.

Prabhunath Singh is currently serving a sentence in a murder case of 1995 itself. Masrakh's MLA Ashok Singh, who had defeated Prabhunath Singh in the election, was murdered in 1995. After the election defeat, Prabhunath Singh allegedly said that he would kill Ashok Singh within three months. Ashok Singh was murdered in broad daylight at his house. Prabhunath Singh was convicted in this case in 2017. He is currently serving a sentence in jail.
