In a massive restructuring in the higher judiciary, the Supreme Court collegium is going to recommend transfers of at least 24 High Court Judges for “better administration of justice”. This is certainly the highest number of transfers to be recommended by the Supreme Court collegium in one go.
As per reliable sources the collegium consisting of four senior-most judges, led by the Chief Justice of India Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud, proposed on Thursday that judges from Punjab and Haryana, Telangana, Gujarat, Allahabad, Bombay, Andhra Pradesh, and Patna be transferred.
Members of Collegium Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant considered inputs from consultee judges. The consultee judges are the judges who previously served in the high courts where the judges being considered for elevation or transfer are currently serving.
All inputs were verified before making recommendations for a major reshuffle in high courts. The high court judges proposed for transfer have also been contacted for their opinions. Judges to be shifted out are asked for their views, but the final decision rests with the collegium if anyone seeks a reconsideration.
The details and names of the judges are yet to be confirmed.
