The Calcutta Police announced on Friday that 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with the vandalism and violence at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital. A city court has remanded the accused to police custody until August 22.
The hospital’s emergency ward, nursing station, medicine store, and outpatient department were attacked on Thursday, coinciding with protests across West Bengal over the alleged rape and murder of a doctor in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9.
Several people, including police officers, were injured during the unrest. Junior doctors at government hospitals continue their strike, demanding strict punishment for the perpetrators and improved workplace security.
Opposition parties have criticized the police for inadequate response during the incident, while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee revealed that two floors of the emergency ward were destroyed, medicines were looted, and equipment was damaged.
