1 lakh cost imposed on 'Enforcement Directorate officer' by Supreme Court, for challenging the bail granted to cancer patient

A bench of Justices MR Shah and MM Sundresh imposed a cost of ₹ 1 Lakh on an officer of the Enforcement Directorate for filing SLP against an order of Allahabad High Court granting bail to a man suffering from Cancer.

The bench said that the filing of the SLP was just wasting the stationary and the legal fee apart from the court's precious time. Therefore, the court imposed costs of ₹ 1 Lakh on an officer who granted permission to file the petition.

Before imposing the cost, the court observed that "In the peculiar facts and circumstance of the case and taking into consideration the fact that the respondent is suffering from Malignancy and Cancer and thereafter when he has been released on bail, the same is not required to be interfered by this court. The Special Leave Petition stands dismissed."
