Mobile lost: Need for Complaint/FIR and blocking & tracing

These days every hand has atleast on mobile phone. Mobiles are lost or stolen at a very frequent rate. This article will give you an insight into the actions taken by you when the Mobile phone is lost.

This is a very confusing situation for a common man to understand how and where to make a complaint about a stolen mobile. These days mobile lost complaints can be made online as well as offline (physically).

The agency which deals with the FIR of Lost phones or stolen mobiles is the police authority of the particular state.  The Government of India has started an initiative in this regard where your mobile phone could be traced also. A mobile lost online complaint can also be filed by a person but mobile lost fir online is always lodged with the State police. This is also called cell phone missing complaint/ report.

Complaint for stolen mobile is necessary to avoid any kind of misuse of the mobile phone by anti social element.

CEIR, the citizen-centric portal of the Department of Telecommunications, serves as a platform for tracking lost or stolen mobile devices. It enables the blocking of such devices across all telecom operator networks, preventing their use in India. Attempting to use a blocked mobile phone triggers traceability measures. Once the mobile phone is located, it can be unblocked on the portal, allowing citizens to resume normal use. The user should block the IMEI of their phone if it has been lost/stolen.

1.    Submission via Website Form:

a. File a report with the police and retain a copy of the report.

b. Obtain a duplicate SIM card for the lost number from your telecom service provider (e.g., Airtel, Jio, Voda/Idea, BSNL, MTNL, etc.). This is crucial as it will serve as the primary mobile number (OTP will be sent to this number) when submitting the IMEI blocking request.

•    Note: SMS functionality on re-issued SIMs is activated 24 hours after SIM activation, as per TRAI's regulation.

c. Prepare your documents, including a copy of the police report and an identity proof. The mobile purchase invoice can also be provided.

d. Complete the request registration form for blocking the IMEI of the lost/stolen phone and attach the required documents. Click here to access the form. e. Upon form submission, you will receive a Request ID, which can be used to check the status of your request and for future IMEI unblocking.

2.    Through State Police:
The alternative option is to utilize the State Police for blocking the IMEI.

To file a complaint, please adhere to the following procedures:

     Complaint Registration:
•    Complete the Complaint Registration Form. Access the form here.
•    Upon form submission, a unique Complaint ID will be generated.
•    The details of the form will also be sent to your provided email ID.
•    Keep the Complaint ID and Registered Mobile Number saved for future reference.

To check the status of your complaint, follow these steps:


    Complaint Status Check:
•    Fill in the Complaint ID and registered mobile number in the Complaint Status Form. Access the form here.
•    Receive a 6-digit OTP on your registered mobile number and confirm it.
•    Submit the form, and the details of your complaint will be made available to you.
